One Night in Turin

This is documentary about England's path to the semi-finals of the 1990 World Cup in Italy. It mixes actual match footage with scenes of training sessions, interviews with Bobby Robson, Gazza, etc and news reports from the time, including some ugly poll tax riot stuff.

Some of the best bits relate to the politics of the era (Thatcher in decline but still holding on) and the general murkiness of the British mass media (history nicely repeating itself lately with Murdoch and his evil orks). One of the 'stars' is a spotty little oik of a sports minister called Colin Moynihan. What a twat.

It's a pretty basic doco, interesting to watch as a historical football piece but just a little too 'Rule Brittannia' to be considered balanced. Admittedly, I had a tear in my eye at one point where Lothar Matthaus is consoling Chris Waddle right after the dreaded penalty miss. Genuine empathy from the Teutonic maestro and along with Robson, the real star of the film for my money.
