The Mixer

Just finished this book by Michael Cox, one of my favourite football analysts. He has encyclopeadic knowledge and a few good lines too (on The Guardian's Football Weekly podcast he once referred to the title race in the Scottish Premier League as 'the world's tallest dwarf contest'). The Mixer looks at tactical changes through the 25 years of the English Premier League and comes to a couple of neat conclusions. One : the introduction of the 'backpass rule' in 1992 (the same year the old First Division became the Premier League) forced defenders and keepers into actually playing the ball instead of passing back to the keeper when in danger. Interestingly, this resulted in a kind of domino effect on the midfield and forward line over time. And two : most of the tactical changes came from Europe. The World Cup: Heroes, Hoodlums, High-kicks and Head-butts

With the 2018 Russia World cup fast approaching (tonight, to be exact), I thought it time to comment on this book by Paul Hansford. It seems like it was commissioned just before the 2014 Brazil World Cup, so it's missing some history - the stand-out being Brazil's 7-1 evisceration at the hands of Germany in the semi-final. I read this to warm up for the finals and it did the job in a light-hearted, sometimes corny, way. The chapter titles include; The Evolution of the World Cup, World Cup Suerpstars and Legends, The World Cup's Most Stunning Results and World Cup Conspiracy Theories. Some of the highlights - The 'Battle(s) of Bern and Santiago' in 1954 and 1962 respectively, the very dodgy Argentina 6 Peru 0 match that enabled the albiceleste to reach the final (and subsequently win), possible doping going all the way back to Switzerland 1954 and the foiled terror plot that apparently planned to kill the England and US teams in 1998! World Cup post-mortem

For a lark, I thought I would gather some thoughts about the 2018 World Cup in Russia. I reckon it's the best I've seen since 1998, possibly even better. For what it's worth, here are some categories: Best game - Initially, I couldn't have imagined a better game than Spain 3 Portugal 3 (or Ronaldo 3), but subsequent matches may have equalled it. I'm thinking specifically of Mexico 1 Germany 0, Japan 2 Senegal 2, France 4 Argentina 3, Belgium 3 Japan 2, Belgium 2 Brazil 1 and these are just the ones I saw. Some terrific matches in all. Hard to pick a favourite but if pushed, I'd go for France 4 Argentina 3. Some great goals (Di Maria & Pavard especially), end to end attacking, Mbappe's pace, Argentina's decline on show, average defending and a little agro to boot (Otamendi, step forward). The Death & Life of Australian Soccer

Not knowing all that much about Australian soccer, I thought I'd have a gander at this book by Australian journalist, Joe Gorman. And it's quite the eye-opener. Gorman delves into the history of soccer in Australia - from the first European ex-pat clubs in the 1930s and 40s to the characters involved in the early days. One name crops up throughout, a guy I'd admittedly never heard of, Andrew Dettre. He arrived in Australia from Hungary (via other parts of Europe) in late 1949 and he started a long career writing about and influencing Australian soccer. Loads of his recommendations were ultimately implemented into the soccer industry, one of them being the advent of summer soccer in the 1989/90 season. Other interesting names I'd never encountered before include Leopold Baumgartner, an Austrian star who arrived in Sydney in 1958 to play for Prague; Ulysees Kokkinos, one of the first 'pop-star' players, whose career was ended by some unseemly extortion an

Outside the Box: A Statistical Journey through the History of Football

Having enjoyed Duncan Alexander's droll nerdism on various football podcasts, I thought I'd have a crack at his book. The verdict is roundly positive, though it should really be called Outside the Box: A Statistical Journey through the History of Football (mainly in the Premier League). This isn't really a complaint as I'm most familiar with said league but I could have done with a bit more on the other main European leagues, not to mention other world football. Perhaps this is something for the other Optas to cover (OptaJose, OptaPaolo, etc), leaving the UK to OptaJoe. There are chapters on Liverpool's failings :), Arsene Wenger's legacy (timely), Messi's brilliance, the World Cup in data, as well as a summary of every season of the Premier League. 'The Forgotten Men and Deeds of the Premier League' is a highlight with names like Branko Strupar (highest scoring player NEVER to assist a goal), Alan Kimble (most assists without scoring hims
